On 12th May we were visited by Billy, a local blacksmith. He showed the Cubs how to make a pair of horseshoes using all his tools and the furnace in the back of his van. All the Cubs were fascinated by the evening. Our inspiration for this evening came from our visit to the Books For Boys exhibition at Palace Green library last autumn where we discovered that during the 1910s in the very early days of the Scouting movement, one of the badges available to scouts was the Blacksmith’s badge (along with coal mining and cow milking)…how times have changed… Billy very kindly gave us the horseshoes to remind the Cubs how they are supposed to be standing at the start and end of our meetings!
